Q.2 Discuss the Chief Characteristics of Elizabethan Poetry

HNGU Patan · British Poetry 14th to 17th Centuries · Notes by Sunil Patani

Introduction: Background

The Elizabethan Age is one of the most glorious periods in English literature. It is linked with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603). This period is often called the Golden Age of English literature because poetry and drama reached a very high level. It was also the age of the English Renaissance.

The Elizabethan Age

It was an age of social, political and religious peace. England became a powerful and prosperous country. People developed patriotism and nationalism. There was also great interest in travel, adventure, exploration, science, art and learning. These conditions created a favourable atmosphere for literature.

Two Periods (1558–1603)

  1. The Age of Spenser (1558–1579) — mainly a period of preparation
  2. The Age of Shakespeare (1579–1603) — full flowering of English literature
પ્રથમ ભાગને Age of Spenser અને બીજા ભાગને Age of Shakespeare કહેવામાં આવે છે.

1. Renaissance Spirit

The most important characteristic is the Renaissance spirit. Renaissance means the rebirth of interest in classical learning, art, literature and human life. Poets became interested in human beings, beauty, nature, knowledge, affection and individual freedom.

2. Influence of Classical Literature

Poets were greatly influenced by ancient Greece and Rome. They borrowed themes, stories, mythology and literary forms. Spenser, Sidney and Shakespeare often used classical references.

3. Influence of Italian Literature

Italian literature, especially Petrarch, influenced English poetry. Sir Thomas Wyatt and the Earl of Surrey introduced and developed the Italian sonnet in England.

4–5. Development of the Sonnet / English Sonnet Form

A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines, generally in iambic pentameter. Wyatt introduced the Italian sonnet; Surrey developed the English form. The Elizabethan sonnet usually has three quatrains and a final couplet. Common rhyme scheme: abab cdcd efef gg. The quatrains develop the idea; the couplet gives a conclusion or new thought.

6. Development of Lyric Poetry

Elizabethan poetry is famous for its lyrical quality. A lyric poem expresses the poet’s personal feelings. Poets wrote about affection, beauty, nature, friendship, youth and the passing of time. Sidney and Shakespeare are especially famous for lyric poetry.

7. Poetry of Affection and Beauty

Affection and beauty are major literary themes. Poets wrote about beauty, separation, faithfulness and emotional feeling. The Petrarchan tradition is clearly seen. The admired person is often presented as beautiful, ideal and hard to reach.

8. Love of Nature

Nature appears as a source of beauty, pleasure and inspiration. Sometimes it is the background for human feeling; sometimes it reflects the poet’s mood. Spenser’s poetry is rich in nature description.

9. Rich Imagination

Poets created imaginary worlds filled with adventure, magic, knights and fairies. Spenser’s The Faerie Queene is the best example.

10. Allegory

Allegory means a story that also teaches a moral idea. In The Faerie Queene, characters and adventures represent moral virtues. The poem aims to entertain and also to teach.

11. Development of Blank Verse

Blank verse is unrhymed iambic pentameter. Surrey used it in his translation of Virgil’s Aeneid. Later Marlowe and Shakespeare used it powerfully in drama.

12. Variety of Subject Matter

Poets wrote about beauty, nature, religion, morality, patriotism, mythology, history, adventure, friendship, human life, death and time. This range shows Renaissance intellectual interest.

13. Patriotism and Nationalism

England was becoming a powerful nation. Writers often expressed pride in England and confidence in the English nation.

14–15. Musical Quality and Richness of Language

Poets paid attention to rhythm, rhyme, sound and verbal beauty. Poetry was often meant to be read aloud or sung. English became richer and more flexible. Poets used metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, imagery and classical references.

16. Use of Mythology

Greek and Roman gods, heroes and stories added richness and dignity. Spenser and Shakespeare used mythology often.

17. Medieval + Renaissance Combination

Knights, chivalry, castles and adventures appear together with humanism, beauty, knowledge and freedom. The Faerie Queene is a good example.

Metaphysical Poetry

Thought + Wit + Imagination · Small poems, big ideas · Notes by Sunil Patani

Introduction

Metaphysical poetry is a remarkable development in seventeenth-century English poetry. It is known for intellectual quality, unusual comparisons, wit, paradoxes, argumentative style and philosophical or spiritual questions. These poets did not only express feeling; they examined feeling through reason, imagination and argument.

1. Meaning of “Metaphysical”

“Meta” means after or beyond; “physical” means the material world. Metaphysics deals with existence, reality, God, the soul, death, knowledge and the relation between human beings and the universe. Metaphysical poetry often moves from an ordinary experience to a deeper idea.

2. Origin and Development

It became prominent towards the end of the Elizabethan age and especially in the Jacobean period. It reached an important stage in the 17th century. John Donne is the central figure. Later poets: George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Henry Vaughan and Richard Crashaw. Unlike many earlier Elizabethan poets, they combined emotion with intellect, so the poems can seem unusual and surprising.

3. Samuel Johnson and the Name

The critic and poet Samuel Johnson associated the term “metaphysical poets” with Donne, Herbert, Crashaw, Marvell and Vaughan. He noticed their wit and elaborate intellectual comparisons. They joined ideas or objects that seemed unrelated through clever reasoning. This became a key feature of the school.

4. Chief Metaphysical Poets

  • John Donne — central poet; religion, human feeling, death and the mind; famous for wit, conceits, paradox and dramatic argument.
  • George Herbert — religious and devotional poetry; relation between God and human beings.
  • Andrew Marvell — wit, argument, time and mortality; ideas developed step by step.
  • Henry Vaughan — mystical and religious poetry; desire for spiritual purity and innocence.
  • Richard Crashaw — devotion, intense spirituality and imaginative expression.

5. Chief Characteristics

Wit: intellectual cleverness; surprising connections between different ideas.

Conceit: an extended unusual comparison. Famous example: Donne compares two people who care for each other to the two legs of a compass. The comparison explains a spiritual connection even when they are apart.

Paradox: a statement that seems contradictory at first but contains a deeper truth. It makes the reader stop and think.

Intellectual quality: the poet develops an argument; the reader must follow the reasoning.

Philosophical nature: questions about existence, body and soul, God, death, the meaning of human feeling, and the universe.

Seriousness with play: serious subjects treated sometimes with wit.

Unusual imagery: images from science, geography, mathematics, religion, daily life and ordinary objects.

Emotion + Reason: feeling and thought work together.

Argumentative style: idea, reasons, comparisons, conclusion — like a debate.

Colloquial language: especially in Donne, speech can be direct and conversational, which makes the poem dramatic.

Major Themes

  • Human affection (earthly and spiritual)
  • Religion and spirituality
  • Life, death and immortality
  • God and the soul
  • Nature and the universe
  • Human body and mind

Important Poems

  • Donne — “The Flea”: a flea is used as a conceit to discuss union and marriage in an argumentative way.
  • Donne — “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning”: two people compared to compass legs; true bond remains even when they are separated.
  • Marvell — “To His Coy Mistress”: argument about time, youth and the shortness of life.
  • Herbert — “The Pulley”: a mechanical pulley explains why human beings stay restless and keep seeking God.
  • Vaughan — “The Retreat”: a wish to return spiritually to the innocence of childhood.
  • Donne — Holy Sonnets: struggle with God, mortality, sin and salvation.

Why it is unique / why it can be difficult

It breaks some traditional rules of poetry. It uses extended conceits, paradoxes and unexpected images. It asks the reader to think deeply. It can be hard because arguments, comparisons and references are complex. The surface meaning is not enough; the reader must see how images support the central argument.

Importance and Revival

Metaphysical poetry showed that poems can discuss philosophy, science, religion, psychology and everyday life, not only beauty. Interest fell in the 18th and 19th centuries, then rose again in the 20th century. T. S. Eliot praised the poets’ method of joining thought and feeling.

Conclusion

Metaphysical poetry holds an important place in English literature. Thought, feeling, wit, imagination and argument work together. Donne, Herbert, Marvell, Vaughan and Crashaw gave the tradition its richness. Its lasting value is that it unites the heart and the mind. It is not only poetry of feeling; it is also poetry of thought.
